LookWest, Ireland: Bilingual Implementation of Award Winning Web Content

In 2010, the Western Development Commission decided to localise their website into Irish in line with their strategic goal to promote the Irish language and culture.

The challenges of the Project were:

  • to develop an Irish language version of the LookWest website, which had initially not been set up for bilingual publication;
  • to develop and implement a streamlined process to deal with a busy live website featuring third party feeds, archived material and new content under the editorial control of WDC;
  • to show sensitivity to the unique cultural specifics and the richness of the Irish language and culture in the Western regions, and reflect this in the linguistic reference points informing the rendering of the LookWest content in Irish.

Context enabled the Western Development Commission to go live with the Irish language version of its award winning website within a very short time frame. This was possible due to the tools and processes we developed to facilitate the efficient localisation of web content. The Western Development Commission now has access to content metrics allowing it to manage the publication process in both languages, English and Irish.

The Irish language version of the website generated a flood of positive feedback that referred to the cultural impact of the content presented.

State Examination Commission, Ireland: Leaving Certificate

In 2011, the State Examination Commission tendered for translation services to assist with the publication of Leaving Certificate examination marking schemes in Irish.

Context won the tender and addressed the following challenges:

  • to develop a workflow responding to the specific authoring processes in place;
  • to improve the re-usability and consistency of published content;
  • to perform the translation with due regard to the specific demands on register and terminology in the context of existing curriculum material;
  • to meet ambitious time lines with a very short mobilisation period determined by the time lines of the school Leaving Certificate examinations;
  • to observe the requisite confidentiality and data protection.

Despite the very ambitious schedule, Context met all time lines and was able to develop the workflow and tool solutions on a live project. This enabled the State Examination Commission to meet its legal obligations and serve their clients to full satisfaction.

The key factors for the success of this project were the linguistic competency deployed and the robust and reliable process we designed.
